This gamba cornered flatback is the second of its kind from the McIntosh Shop. Helen modeled it after a Francois Jacques Barbe c. 1880. The sleek simplicity of the design inspired her and the first model proved itself to be worth repeating. There is no crease in the back, just a gentle curve from a generous 9” rib at the bottom block to an ergonomically friendly 5-1/2 inches at the neck.

This bass is Ebony-free except for a layer of salvaged Ebony on the extension. This is the first bass from our shop (or anywhere) to have Hop Hornbeam details. Hop Hornbeam is native to our area and is strong and dense enough to replace Ebony for some parts. The fingerboard is made from, GaiaTone.

This build features a carved button with a leaf design and matching carving on the scroll.

This bass has a rich and dark tone and sustained resonance. It feels great in your hands and is easy to play.
